March

We had about a foot of snow yesterday. The horses were out in it during the morning, but then it changed to sleet and freezing rain so they came inside. They had fun playing in the fresh snow though! It's pretty warm today (30's), but we are supposed to get cold temperatures again this coming week. This is Abby looking pretty, and under her is Scooby looking disgusted.
When I put the horses out this morning, what's the first thing Sundance does??? You guessed it - he went down to roll in the nice fresh snow! Of course then he couldn't get up... So at 6:30 I started making phone calls. It's amazing to me that so many people care enough to come without question when I call. The first 3 calls were to Jim, Jean, and Amy S. They all came right over except that Amy stopped at work and got the straps we used last time. Then Jean's husband Paul came, and Vicki was here doing chores so she helped too. Sundance was out past where the tractor could reach so we tried several things and nothing worked. So we brought in the horses from the main paddock and put them in stalls and I plowed a path to the lower gate. Amy, Jean and Vicki took down all the fencing by the runs and I plowed my way right through and up to Scooby. Jean put Scooby in a stall, Amy took the gate down, and the tractor was right next to Sundance. With help from everyone we got the straps around him and hooked to the tractor and we lifted him up. It took him some time to get his feet under him but then he was fine. Jim took the tractor back the way I had brought it. Amy, Vicki and Jean got the other horses back out and the fences back up. Paul helped pick up everything. Jim had called Barb earlier and she came straight from work, and I had called Carla and she and Sherry came right up. Carla walked with Sundance so I could feed the dogs and the birds at the house. Vicki had to go take care of her horse - who wanted his breakfast! Amy had to run home (but she'll be back later), Jim and Barb went to do more good deeds (shoveling snow for people), Sherry went to snow-blow home and her mom's. Jean and Carla stayed and helped me get chores finished and then they left. So now Sundance is back out with Deja, with a blanket on. I'm praying he doesn't go down again, but at least when he is there I can see him from the house. It was about a 2 hour ordeal to get him up this time. The photo above is him with Deja in the snow yesterday.
