Happy New Year!

Well, it's 2008! Happy new year everyone - I hope you all have a great one! It's been an odd year so far (all 8 days). It started out VERY cold and snowy, (see the 1st 2 photos) and then turned warm with a lot of thawing. Today was beautiful, sunny and highs in the upper 40's.

We haven't been able to ride, and so there hasn't been a whole lot to write about until now. I can tell you about Saturday which was a fun day. We had BOTH farriers here! Bruce and Ken are friends and get along great and they had Carla and I laughing all morning. Ken's wife Eli and their little daughter were here as well and they joined in the fun as you can see in the pic. Bruce and Ken had so much fun they decided to schedule their next visits together too!

Bruce had an extra horse to do. Viki (who used to help out in the barn last winter), rode her horse Chance over for Bruce to do (this is a pic of Chance with Bruce). Chance has had a farrier who did a REALLY bad job on his feet and it's going to take several trims for Bruce to get them where they should be. Chance's old farrier hurt his feet and made him very sore so Chance is not very fond of the whole foot trimming process. He has been known to bite, kick, and even run over people to get away from what he doesn't like. Bruce worked with him for a while before even trying to pick up his feet. He led him, handled him, gentled him, and spent some time letting Chance know that Bruce would not hurt him, but expected good behavior. Chance tested him once with an attempt at a bite, but Bruce caught it before he connected. After that Chance was very good. Bruce really liked him. Viki will bring Chance back for Bruce to work on every time Bruce comes for a while. She is planning to take Chance to college with her next year so Bruce will refer her to a farrier over there when the time comes.

All the horses are barefoot now, so if we do any riding it will just be short rides until spring. They've all been pretty bored, so we've been giving them some poplar logs to chew on. At least it occupies them for a little while. I'll update again when there is something new to tell you...
