Phew! It's been an busy two weeks for us here at DHF since I last posted! Farrier Ken came and did the "regular" horses. Trimmed the ponies and Deja, and put shoes on Tapper and Ziegy. Farrier Bruce came and did the drafts - they all have shoes now, Scooby, Scotty, Jazz and Dolly. The good news is everyone behaved well, the bad news is that Bruce is retiring!!! He's coming once more at least, and hopefully will be able to bring along the farrier he's recommending to take over. Keep your fingers crossed for us that it all works out!

Heather came on Friday. She did shots for the ponies, and floated Ziegy's teeth. She also did some work on Tapper's tail. A couple of weeks ago Tapper came into heat and she let Ziegy play with her tail. Unfortunately things got a little rough and he scalped part of the tail. I cleaned it up and put ointment on it and thought it was fine but it wasn't. Apparently he destroyed the blood flow to the lower part of the tail and that part of the tail is now dead! It's going to fall off eventually. We cut off a lot of the hair on the lower tail and I saved it, then Heather shaved the rest of the lower tail so I can keep it clean - it's infected so she's on antibiotics. Hopefully it falls off by itself and the infection clears up, otherwise Heather will have to come back and amputate it.

Esther was home for a couple of days last week. She brought her horse Doc home from school. She and her friend Maggie came up on Thursday afternoon and rode with Carla and me. Esther rode Tapper (she's the one who noticed that Tapper's tail wasn't doing well), Maggie rode Dolly, Carla rode Scotty and I rode Jazz. We just did the Dutton loop, it was fun! Everyone had a good time although Maggie had a little trouble walking after the ride - she's used to much narrower horses!!!

Deja had a birthday this week and Carla made her a "5 layer cake". It had carrots, apples, peppermint candy, sweet feed, and granola bars. Deja LOVED it!!! Happy birthday Deja!
